UBP: Warwick will get its own Police station

Opposition leader Michael Dunkley said Warwick would get a Police station if his party is voted into power.

It is the second Police station the United Bermuda Party have said they will open if they win the December 18 election.

Along with the UBP's pledge to restore the St. George's Police Station, the party also believes "Warwick should have a 24-hour station".

Mr. Dunkley said: "We will open a Police station in Warwick, where the incidence of housebreaking is at its highest.

"We will hire enough new officers for a visible Police presence in every parish."

The UBP has made crime prevention and detection a big plank of their "Agenda for Change". This includes increasing the number of Police officers, CCTV cameras and placing GPS technology in all Police vehicles.

Mr. Dunkley said he believed the Police force had been understaffed for a number of years and the first order of business would be increasing the ranks.

This would require them to consider paying new recruits more to compete with the international businesses on the Island. Particularly as foreign officers were beginning on the pay grade level four while local recruits start at pay level grade one, he said.

It could also require hiring foreigners who needed further training, which could be done while they assimilated to Bermuda's culture, in order to bring staffing levels up, he said.

Mr. Dunkley, who speaks on public safety for the UBP, said Warwick was one of Bermuda's most densely populated parishes and had one of the highest crime rates.
