UK citizenship on the agenda
A decision on whether Bermudians will continue to have the right of British citizenship should Bermuda go independent will be on the agenda for talks between Britain and Bermuda.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Press officer said that the issue would be up for discussion between the two countries ?before any final decision is made?.
Governor Sir John Vereker said that Government House will likely not be making any comment on Independence any time soon.
?We are going to be listening to the discussion for several weeks, possibly months, before we make an intervention,? he said.
Bermudians and other nationals of Britain?s colonies had full British citizenship restored to them in 2002, three years after the United Kingdom Government rewrote its relations with its colonies in a White Paper.
Taking up British citizenship was optional, and then-Deputy Governor Tim Gurney said that it was likely that those with British passports would be able to keep them at Independence because British law allows for dual citizenship.
But he also said that citizenship would be subject to negotiation should Bermuda decide to become Independent.
