... while civilian staff threaten to strike

Civilian prison staff will meet this week and may vote for strike action over poor conditions in the service.

About a dozen of the 25 civilian staff met Bermuda Public Services Union general secretary Edward Ball yesterday to complain that there are too many temporary workers and that fact that many employees to do not have job descriptions.

The move came on the same day Prison staff met at Bermuda Industrial Union headquarters to try to find a solution to the over-crowding crisis.

It is understood the staff have raised these issues with Prison Commissioner John Prescod but made no progress.

Bermuda Prison Officers Association have also said they hit a brick wall while trying to make progress with the controversial commissioner.

Mr. Ball said yesterday: “A number of concerns were raised and I will share them with the Commissioner and the Permanent Secretary at the Department of Labour and Home Affairs.”
