Woman receives conditional discharge after dog attacks neighbour?s pet

A woman was give a six-month conditional discharge yesterday after a pitt bull dog in her care attacked a neighbour?s pet.

Valerie Wilson, 52, of Ocean Avenue, Devonshire admitted she had been looking after the female brindle-type pitt bull when it attacked the mixed breed dog of J. Herbert Jones last November.

Crown counsel Shakira Dill said that at 6.30 p.m. on November 4, Mr. Jones?s son heard dogs fighting outside his home.

The son broke up the fight between his dog ?Lana? and the pitt bull. The pitt bull then ran away toward the shore.

Lana had to be treated by antibiotics, which Wilson paid $80 for on December 2, 2003.

Dog warden Fabian Minors recommended a six month conditional discharge for Wilson yesterday because it was her first offence.

She did not own the pitt bull but had been taking care of it, he said.

He added that Wilson had moved the dog to Pembroke and put fencing around her property so that her dog would no longer escape.
