Woman threw drugs into jail

A woman who admitted throwing drugs over a prison fence so that she could benefit financially once they were sold appeared in Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Tashay Mink, 18 of Hamilton Parish admitted possessing cannabis resin and cocaine freebase within an increased penalty zone with intent to supply.

The court heard that on February 3 this year Minks was seen on surveillance cameras approaching an external fence at the Westgate Correctional Facility. She threw a brown paper bag over the fence and then rode away.

A prison guard discovered the bag, which was later found to contain a bottle of brown liquid, 1.86 grams of cannabis resin, 0.12 grams of cocaine freebase and a picture of Minks. The brown liquid in the bottle was alcohol.

When first arrested Minks admitted throwing the bag over the fence but denied having knowledge of its' contents. She later admitted purchasing the drugs. She told police the drugs were to be sold for profit within the prison and that she was to receive a share of the profits.

Minks apologised to the court and said her behaviour was out of character. She added: "I let someone influence me. I should have said no. It will never happen again."

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo replied: "This is more than a mistake. This is dumb. This is stupidity."

Mr. Tokunbo released Minks on $5,000 bail with one surety. Minks will return to court on November 6 for sentencing.
