Workers often 'rescue' parts for scavengers
If you visit the Kindley Field dump you will be dismayed at what people throw away. Workers at the dump have found some real gems.
One worker says if he sees something he thinks someone might like to use then he does not crush it right away, but leaves it to see if anyone interested comes along to pick it up.
He said: ?People throw away good things ? computers, chairs, washers, dryers, desks, things that shouldn?t be trashed.?
Just at that moment a dump truck arrived and new gaskets are pulled from the pile it dropps off. The worker planned to save them for any auto mechanics who might drop by.
He said he often did this and if he saw something that he thought somebody could use he would put it on the side.
He once saw a new refrigerator that had been thrown away because it was missing one piece of glass and a perfectly decent dryer being disposed of simply because the owner wanted a bigger one.
A host of gym equipment in working order regularly turns up. One of the things most often dumped were computers. In just that day he had already seen four loads of computers.
?Here you can find parts for cars, pretty well anything,? he said, before adding that he has noted the large number of people who came down to strip bikes for parts they needed. ?People come down here like bees,? he said.
A mechanic was at the site stripping a cycle, saying: ?You can find bike parts that are still good. People will come down here and look for parts.?
He pointed out a cycle that had already been stripped. He noted the different parts that were reusable. ?You don?t throw them away because somebody else can use it,? he said noting that new the parts can be very expensive and sometimes the shops do not have what you want in stock and more than likely you can find it at the dump.
