You'll want to wear them forever!
Look out, world ? Bermuda shorts are back and you'll want to wear them forever.
American clothing giant Old Navy's latest song-and-dance ad, done in trademark Old Navy-style, screamed Bermuda and Bermuda shorts as marketing of the store's "top spring trend" swung into action this week.
"You'll want to wear them forever," the ad's jingle (sung to the tune of "Fame") promises, adding that the "long shorts from the tropical isle" make families look "crisp and clever".
Featuring models frolicking on the beach and a colour-coded map of Bermuda, the ad was created by Deutsch Advertising and should run for about a month.
"You should remember their name," it finishes, as a voice-over happily chants "Bermuda" over and over.
Yesterday Tourism Minister Ewart Brown said he had not yet seen the jaunty ad ? however it was exactly what he had been hoping New York's Fashion Week would result in.
"It's absolutely wonderful news that an industry brand has picked them up," he said.
"That's what Fashion Week was all about ? we were hoping they would be sufficiently interesting.
"This increases our visibility by a huge factor."
A Tourism spokeswoman also expressed delight on the behalf of the Department about the ads.
"The Department of Tourism is absolutely thrilled that the Old Navy franchise has decided to feature Bermuda and Bermuda shorts in its current advertising campaign.
"This is excellent exposure for Bermuda. We saw our shorts recently featured last month during Fashion Week, by Peter Som, and now one of the most popular clothing chains in the US has decided to capitalise on the idea. This clearly goes to show that the Bermuda shorts are considered a very hot fashion item this year. The Bermuda Department of Tourism will continue to take advantage of Bermuda shorts in an effort to generate buzz for us as a destination."
Bermudian viewers of the ad noted that the shorts featured in the ad were the correct length, falling to just above the knee.
Attempts to reach Gap, Inc., Old Navy's parent company, were unsuccessful yesterday afternoon.
