Young photographers shine in competition

The winners of the Bermuda Zoological Society?s (BZS) fifth annual Photographic Competition and the first annual David Raine Memorial Poetry Competition were announced this week.

The competition, which ran from May through July, drew more than 300 photos and over 40 poems.

?The entries we received were of a very high standard and the judges had a very hard decision choosing the winners in each category,? BZS Marketing Co-ordinator Nicola Lucas said.

?Every year the standard and the number of entries increase. We were especially excited to receive the poetry entries this year, which also posed a challenge for our judges, with outstanding entries from both children and adults.?

The BZS is grateful to its sponsors and partners in this competition that encourages people to take a close look at Bermuda?s abundant biodiversity.

Bermuda Paint Company and Aberfeldy Nurseries sponsored the photography competition while the BZS established the poetry competition in memory of the late Mr. Raine who was a long-serving board member. Bermuda Homes and Gardens Magazine will feature winning entries from both competitions in its upcoming autumn issue.

The winners will receive their awards on Friday, September 23 during a reception from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. at the Bermuda Society of Arts Gallery (BSOA) at City Hall.

All photo and poetry entries will be displayed in the BSOA?s Edinburgh Gallery from September 23 through October 5.
