Bogus website prompts warning from bank

Bank of Bermuda customers are being warned to be on their guard against another fraudulent e-mail that attempts to trick the recipient to visit a bogus website and reveal their personal banking details.

It comes only weeks after a major restructuring of the bank’s operations and could catch out customers who wrongly believe it is part of that process.

In a statement the bank said it would shut down all bogus websites as soon as it is made aware of their existence, in the meantime it is urging customers to be vigilant.

Richard Brown, Bank of Bermuda’s head of personal financial services, said: “Bank of Bermuda is aware that some of our customers have received a fraudulent e-mail asking them to log on to a bogus website and provide personal financial information. The public should note that phishing e-mails along with other fraudulent e-mails are constantly circulating.

“In this instance, the bank acted immediately and has through the appropriate authorities, disabled the offending site. We would like to advise our customers that any requests received via email to validate personal information should be declined.”

He added: “Under no circumstances would Bank of Bermuda send e-mails requesting customers to confirm debit/credit card numbers, account numbers along with their personal log on information.”
