<Bz38>Collector's Hill motorists can see the light
The latest traffic lights in Bermuda are up and running — although it will be next week before they are officially declared open.
The lights, which were first announced a year ago, have been put up at the Collector's Hill junction in Smith's.
They will be able to sense the length of the traffic queue and adjust the green lights accordingly.
However, the public is being warned to drive with caution and be patient as there will have to be adjustments made.
The project for the dangerous junction was delayed by more than six months due to negotiations between Government and landowners including Gibbons Management Services Limited and Auditor General Larry Dennis.
Mr. Dennis' land dispute was resolved in April last year after it was agreed to re-pave his access road for the use of his land. And Gibbons Management Services faced a compulsory purchase order from the Government for its land if a financial settlement was not possible.
According to Mr. Gibbons the matter was resolved and was a 'happy ending' for those involved.
While Mr. Dennis was also satisfied with the agreement, he added: "I have notified Works and Engineering that people are still parking along the 'Absolutely No Parking' zone.
"If the new system is expected to work satisfactorily, the No Parking zones will have to be enforced."
With negotiations and construction complete, the official opening of the lights is scheduled for Wednesday, January 24 at 12 noon.
