Too many Christmas drinks

A guest worker who enjoyed too many drinks on Christmas Day spent the night in the cells after making the mistake of getting on his bike.

Delfin Agulto, 30, collided with a wall on the road where he lives, Valley Road, Paget, at 10.30 p.m on Christmas night. He was arrested by the Police who noticed that he appeared to be drunk.

A breath test showed he had 119 mg of alcohol in his bloodstream when the legal limit is 80mg. Agulto told the Police: "I was only parking the bike."

He was charged over the matter on Boxing Day having been kept at the Police station overnight.

At Magistrates' Court yesterday he pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol and also driving while disqualified, because records showed he'd already been banned from the roads for the period March 15 2007 to March 14 2008.

Agulto, a waiter from the Philippines, explained to acting Magistrate Edward Bailey that he was planning to go home to the Philippines on Boxing Day. He'd hoped to buy the bike when he returned.

Apologising for getting on it when drunk, he said: "It was Christmas Day. I'm really sorry for that."

Mr. Bailey fined him $2,000, banned him from driving for 12 months, and meted out eight demerit points.

Teacher learns drunk-driving lesson

A chemistry teacher caught drink-driving later used the experience to teach his students about the effects of alcohol.

Kevin Thompson of Warwick Academy pleaded guilty to riding his motorcycle at almost double the legal alcohol limit .

Crown counsel Larissa Burgess told Magistrates' Court he was caught at a Police checkpoint on Crow Lane, Pembroke, in the early hours of February 10.

Officers observed that he appeared to be drunk, and a breath test showed him to have 151mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood when the limit is 80mg.

Asked by acting Magistrate Edward Bailey if he knew about the effects of alcohol, the defendant, of Happy Talk Lane, Devonshire replied: "Yes, since then I've shown my class. I've shown them how to make a breathalyser and shown them what happens with the chemical reactions."

Mr. Bailey fined Thompson $1,000 and banned him from driving for 12 months, commenting: "I hope you've learned your lesson."
