Crime Stoppers to host conference
Bermuda is to host a prestigious international crime-fighting conference featuring topics ranging from international terrorism to prison reform.
It is only the second time in 29 years that a country other than Canada and the US has been chosen to host the Crime Stoppers International conference.
Kicking off at the Fairmont Southampton resort in November, internationally-renowned experts from as far afield as Australia and Britain will share information on issues such as money laundering, electronic crime and illegal immigrants.
Crime Stoppers Bermuda delegates won the privilege of hosting the event during this year's conference in Calgary.
At least 800 delegates and their spouses are expected for the six-day event, providing a boost to the tourism industry.
Conference chairman Dave Curruthers said: "Bermuda could not have achieved selection without the great support received from the Department of Tourism and without the wonderful facilities of the Fairmont Southampton.
"This is a great win for Bermuda and we have every intention of changing those winning votes into registrations and bed nights, but there is a great deal of work to be done before then.
"It took teamwork to win the bid and it is going to take a significant amount of teamwork to stage a successful conference of which all Bermuda can be justly proud."
