Flood of interest in golf tournament, say organisers
PGA Grand Slam of Golf organisers say excitement for the contest is at an all-time high as they prepare to bring it to Bermuda for the first time.
Sponsorship has exceeded expectations while the number of volunteers and ticket interest is also better than anticipated, according to director of the competition David Charles.
Florida-based Mr. Charles said he was delighted with the way things were shaping up for the showpiece event's first appearance outside Hawaii since the early 1990s.
"Excitement on and off the island of Bermuda is at an all-time high for the PGA Grand Slam of Golf," he said.
"We are confident Bermuda will be an excellent host for the 25th PGA Grand Slam of Golf."
The Grand Slam will take place at the Mid Ocean Club from October 15 to 17. It is for the winners of golf's four majors — the Masters, the US Open, the British Open and the US PGA Championship. The buzz around Bermuda reached new heights after golfing legend Tiger Woods secured his place in the event by winning the PGA Championship in Oklahoma on Sunday.
It is said his participation would boost the worldwide TV audience by up to 50 percent, ensuring Bermuda gets maximum exposure.
Woods, along with fellow major winners Zach Johnson, Angel Cabrera and Padraig Harrington, are not obliged to take part. But according to Premier Ewart Brown, the signs from the PGA are positive on Woods, who has won the tournament seven times in the last nine years in Hawaii.
A PGA spokesman told The Royal Gazette details on the players' schedules would be available soon.
Regarding Dr. Brown, who watched Woods' tussle for victory in Oklahoma, Mr. Charles said: "We enjoyed having Premier Brown in Tulsa for the 89th PGA Championship last week."
