Grandmother living in fear after man threatens her with machete

A grandmother says she is too frightened to drive her car after a man threw glass bottles at it then threatened her with a machete not to call the Police.

A shaken Marian (Nana) Tyrell, 61, got her daughter to dial 911 despite this — but with no arrest made more than a week on, she is concerned the culprit is still at large.

Describing the drama which unfolded as she drove home around 7.35 p.m on March 7, Mrs. Tyrell said she had the window of her Chevrolet wound down as she approached her Middletown, Pembroke, home.

"Just as I was coming off the hill, someone threw two bottles at my car, " she said. "One was a Heineken bottle and one was Guinness. The Guinness bottle landed in my car. Just after he threw the second bottle he started to run after my car."

Mrs. Tyrell, a mother-of-three and grandmother-of-eight said she was scared the man would "chop" her.

"I was screaming, and then my daughter and landlord came out. This man was running out with a machete. He told me he would chop me, then come back and burn my house down if I called the Police. I was so shocked, I didn't know what to do."

Mrs. Tyrell said the culprit — whom she described as a light-skinned black man — left the scene. She added that her son and daughter both know of him, and he is a 35-year-old recently released prisoner

According to her, the Police arrived 15 to 20 minutes after her daughter made the 911 call and took a statement, but declined her offer that they take the Guinness bottle for evidence. Mrs. Tyrell told them the name of the suspect.

She said she had spoken to the Police three times for updates since the incident. They have asked if she wished to press charges and she confirmed that she did.

Mrs. Tyrell added: "I'm still shaken and still not myself. I'm still scared to drive my car. I need to get over it but I want to know why he did it. I never bother anybody, I just drive from home to work. I don't bother a soul."

A Police spokesman said that the suspect was known to them and Police were trying to locate him for questioning. He confirmed no arrest had been made.
