The charity, which was founded in 1975 to provide meals for those who were unable to cater for themselves, will be holding a tag day on October 24 to raise funds.

Initially it served 15 people, but over the decades demand has grown and now more than 200 meals are delivered four days a week, to homes and to the dialysis unit.

About one third of meals are provided at no cost to the recipient. Meals on Wheels supplies meals to the elderly and infirm and maintains regular personal contact with the people concerned.

The charity depends heavily on volunteers. A typical meal service day would involve approximately 40 people.

MOW services are requested by the hospital social workers and others, including family members, for those who are unable to provide meals for themselves.

A potential client is interviewed and relevant procedures are followed, including obtaining diet requirements and other instructions from the potential client's physician.

If you would like to become a volunteer, whether it is in the kitchen or delivering meals, please call MOW at 236-1815.

This Wednesday its volunteers will be outside supermarkets and on the streets of Hamilton looking for donations from the public to ensure they can continue providing the service across the Island.
