Leukaemia is a cancer of the blood-forming tissues of the bone marrow in which white blood cells proliferate abnormally, with life-threatening effects.

The type that Kenzi suffers from — Mixed-Lineage Leukaemia (MLL) — was identified by researchers at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Children's Hospital Boston around five years ago.

It is genetically different from the more common childhood disease, Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL).

According to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute website, this research discovery explained why MLL did not respond well to the standard chemotherapy treatment for ALL.

The researchers have also uncovered promising drug treatments that may improve the treatment of MLL — although Kenzi's mother, Sharon Azab said much is still unknown about the recently discovered condition.

About 35,000 diagnoses of all types of leukaemia will be made each year, according to the American Cancer Society, with about 22,280 deaths.
