Technical centre ready by August

Work is underway to transform Gym Field into Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) new technical centre.

The FIFA funded training base, complete with synthetic pitch and floodlights, should be up and running by August, the BFA announced at a press conference yesterday.

Costing $1.3 million, and funded through FIFA's Goal project, the facility will become the national team's training base and will also be available to the domestic clubs and for referee development.

The premises will also be the home of CedarBrigde Academy students for their gym activity.

BFA president Larry Mussenden said the centre would be the first of its kind to grace the Island.

"The project is certified and controlled by FIFA and the synthetic pitch will be manufactured and laid by a Canadian company called FieldTurf," said Mussenden.

"Our pitches have to endure a lot of wear and tear with both football and cricket played on them throughout the year.

"This synthetic pitch will be able to withstand that constant beating. The project has been in the planning for quite some time and we hope to unveil it mid-August."

The new facility will allow the BFA to run their development programmes, while also providing a training resource for all national teams.

Stamped with FIFA's seal of approval, the world's football governing body will lend their expertise throughout the installation process.
