Tribute website launches today
A tribute website has been set up for friends to share their grief on the anniversary of Marcus Gibbings' murder.
The site is the brainchild of Andrew Beek, who knew Mr. Gibbings through his work in the IT sector.
Believed to be the first of its kind in Bermuda, the In Memory website, www.inmemory.bm, will also allow other bereaved people to set up tributes to loved ones in future.
"Around the time of Marcus' death I was also experiencing my own personal loss. I came up with this web based memorial site using my programming background and finished it last month or so to mark the anniversary of Marcus' death," explained Mr. Beek, 41, from Smith's.
The site went live earlier this month, and almost 30 tributes have already been left to Mr. Gibbings. Quoting a piece penned by loved ones for his memorial service last year, the site says:
"Marcus was a bright young man who always had a smile for everyone he met. Even when he was attempting to be serious he would always have that same grin.
"To know Marcus was to know a man that would go the extra mile for you.
"He was always ready to help someone if he was able. His kindness was not a weakness, it made him the man that we all loved and cared about."
One friend sharing their fond memories on the site says: "It's hard to put into words how much we miss you, your smile, your infectious laugh, your overall bubbly personality. We miss you Marcus, more than you'll ever know."
Another simply reads: "To the one who always smiled no matter what...you will always be remembered."
Mourners can light virtual candles on the In Memory website and even leave floral tributes. Mr. Beek said: "It's quite encouraging that so many people are using it...it's a not-for-profit initiative although I hope to get some advertising to support the site from local florists and funeral homes."
