Woman threatened cop with golf club

A woman struck a policeman in the face and threatened him with a golf club during an incident sparked by her parking, a court has heard.

According to the prosecution, Nakia Smith blocked in Detective Sergeant David Geraghty's cycle, then lost her temper when he pointed this out.

Smith denied unlawfully assaulting Mr. Geraghty and possessing an offensive weapon — the golf club — during the incident on Front Street.

However, she admitted assaulting Police Constable McKeon Stevens who was called to deal with it and using offensive words.

With Crown Counsel Takiya Burgess offering no evidence on the first charges, Smith was sentenced to a fine totalling $1,000 by a Magistrate.

Outlining the circumstances, Ms Burgess said Mr. Geraghty returned to his cycle in a bay in the parking lot opposite the Emporium building in Front Street around 11.15 p.m last April 13.

He found an unoccupied Mazda car parked outside the designated bays, which was up against his cycle and preventing it from being moved, she alleged. He also noticed two other cycles lying on the ground.

Ms Burgess said that while waiting for the owner of the car to return, Mr. Geraghty tried the rear door handle to see if it was locked.

However, claimed the prosecutor, Smith arrived on the scene and told him: "Leave my vehicle the f**k alone."

Ms Burgess told the court that when Mr. Geraghty pointed out the position of his cycle and the others on the ground, Smith approached in aggressive manner and said: "You can't prove nothing! You can't prove I knocked those bikes over."

Continuing her hostile outburst, Ms Burgess said Smith struck Mr. Geraghty in the face several times and before retrieving a golf club from a golf bag, while a man with her tried to calm her down.

According to the prosecutor, Smith waved the club at Mr. Geraghty and said: "I'm going to f**ck you up."

He called the Police as her violent outburst continued, and when Police Constable Stevens arrived she pushed him in the chest with both hands.

It was not made clear in court whether Mr. Geraghty was on duty at the time.

Offering mitigation on behalf of Smith, 31, of Woodlands Road, Pembroke, lawyer Edward King said her behaviour may have been sparked by her mixing medication for diabetes with alcohol.

He further claimed that her anger was sparked because she believed Mr. Geraghty was about to write a note on her windscreen with lipstick.

"She's normally a very calm person," he told the court, explaining she has "a very good job" with BISYS Hedge Fund Services.

Speaking in her own defence, Smith said: "It was out of character. I could have handled it a different way."

She claimed she felt the need to protect herself and that her car was "nowhere near" any of the bikes, with those on the ground already there before she arrived.

Handing her $500 fines for assaulting Police Constable Stevens and using offensive language, Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo told her: "That whole thing was way over the top. I don't think you were protecting yourself."
