Accountant charged with stealing $200,000
A former accountant appeared yesterday at Magistrates' Court where he faced charges of stealing more than $200,000 through his employer.
Markus Joerg Staebler did not have to enter pleas to the 14 counts of fraud, alleged to have happened while he worked as for Bermuda Resort Hotels, as the charges must be heard in the Supreme Court.
Staebler, 39, of Paddock Road, Warwick, is alleged to have stolen the money from at least four hotels between June 2005 and February 2007.
He's accused of obtaining the money by writing cheques out to himself, as well as in his wife's name, from accounts belonging to the business and depositing them to his personal bank account.
Additionally, he's accused of manipulating credit card terminals to deposit money to his account and adding himself to the weekly payroll of at least three businesses.
The businesses affected included: Surfside Beach Club, Grape Bay Hotel, Wharf Hotel Co. Ltd., Bermuda Resort Hotels and Harmony Resorts.
Staebler is understood to be represented by defence lawyer Mark Pettingill. The matter was adjourned until March 3.
Staebler has previously pleaded guilty to seven theft charges, totalling around $24,000, from Southside Beach Club.
Staebler pleaded guilty to these charges on February 1 and was to be sentenced yesterday in Supreme Court but this matter was also adjourned until March 3.
