Bank customers warned about scam emails

Scam emails were sent out yesterday claiming to be from Butterfield Bank's internet banking website.

The emails contain a fake link, http://www.jolannews.biz/cach/login.php, or requests customers to click on word links to update their account information.

The links direct the user to a false website similar the Butterfield Direct Internet Banking customer login page.

This email is not from the Bank and is a 'phishing' scam created to get customers' information in order to access their bank accounts.

Susan Mylchreest, Vice President, Electronic Banking said: "Butterfield Bank will never send out any unsolicited email requests for personal banking information.

"Customers can access their account information safely via our corporate website www.butterfieldbank.com or the Butterfield Direct Internet Banking site www.butterfielddirect.com."

Ms Mylchreest also advises any recipients of these emails to just ignore them and delete immediately and, if in doubt, to contact the Bank at 299 3800 before doing anything.

The website has been shut down and the Bank is investigating its origins.
