Injured container ship crewman tended to by local doctorA doctor was transported out to a container ship off St George’s on Saturday night to treat a crew member with facial injuries.A spokesman for Bermuda Maritime Operations centre said the man was injured when a grinder tool got damaged and a piece of the machinery flew off and lacerated his face.The centre was notified of the incident on board the 10,000-tonne ship Kasif Kalkavan at 4.30pm Saturday. The vessel later dropped anchor off St George’s. “She arrived around 9pm and a pilot launch with medical staff went to assist. They put stitches in his face on the ship and he did not have to come ashore,” explained a spokesman.The vessel is registered in the Marshall Islands and the injured sailor and the rest of the crew are all Turkish.The vessel was on its way from Savannah, Georgia, to Mersin, Turkey, and has now continued with its journey.Cruise ship worker charged in Magistrates’ Court with sexual assaultA 40-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting a female co-worker on board the Caribbean Princess cruise ship.The Filipino seaman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared in Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner on Friday. The attack is alleged to have occurred on December 28.The defendant’s bail of $5,000 was extended by Mr Warner until his March 7 trial date. The man denied the charge at an initial January 28 Magistrates’ Court appearance. He is represented by lawyer Kenrick James.It is understood that police travelled to Miami last month to bring the defendant back to the Island, and that he voluntarily returned with them. He has since remained in police custody.Police reissue warning about burglariesThe Bermuda Police Service has advised residents to remain vigilant after a series of burglaries in the west end.An Apple iPad was reportedly taken from a home on Morgan Hill in Somerset sometime between 7.30am on Thursday and 7am on Friday while the residents were away.In a separate incident a home on Beacon Hill Lane in Somerset has a quantity of jewellery stolen between 7am and 6pm on Friday.Another burglary took place at Bridge View Lane in Somerset between 7.30am and 4.30pm on Friday.It appears someone gained entry to the house while the home owners were out and stole a quantity of cash, a Sony PlayStation video game system and a men’s white & blue pedal cycle.A Police spokesman said: “The Bermuda Police Service continues to advise the public to remain vigilant regarding burglaries by making sure windows and doors are locked before leaving their homes unattended, even for short periods of time.“Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities or individuals in their neighbourhoods to Police on 295-0011”.Men rob young woman of her motorcycleAn 18-year-old Pembroke woman suffered injuries to her face after being robbed of a motorcycle yesterday.A 25-year-old Pembroke man was subsequently arrested on Front Street, but his accomplice escaped on the bike.At 1.30am, two men attacked the woman as she prepared to ride off on the motorcycle on Reid Street.Police said the assailants and victim were known to each other.Anyone with information on the motorcycle with the license BF 524 is asked to call police at 295 0011.A burglary was also reported for a residence in St. George’s.Jewellery and a laptop were removed from a home on Hayward Drive while it was unoccupied, between 8.30am and 6pm Thursday.Warwick man robbed of his wallet on SaturdayA 25-year-old Warwick man was unharmed after a man robbed him of his wallet in Warwick, near the junction with Spring Hill.The robbery happened around 12.35am on Saturday when the man was accosted by someone he didn’t know. Police are asking for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Somerset Criminal Investigation Unit on 234-1010.Man banned for impaired ridingA Pembroke man has been banned from the roads for two years for impaired driving.Jari Fischbacher, 23, of Spanish Point, said he had been driving in circles at a Hamilton junction because he was trying to find his phone. Crown counsel Robert Welling told Magistrates’ Court that on January 29 at 12.20am, police on Church Street noticed an Oleander auxiliary cycle drive around a vehicle stopped at a red light.Police stopped the cycle after it went north on the Par-la-Ville Road pavement and then turned east back onto Church Street.Fischbacher smelled of liquor. He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station where a breath test showed 206 milligrams of alcohol for 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol.Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $1,000 and disqualified him from driving for 24 months.Fischbacher was also fined $100 and given seven demerit points for driving without a licence.
