Police appeal for calm after fatal shooting
Police have appealed for calm after the fatal shooting of 29-year-old construction worker Colford Ferguson.Bermuda's first murder victim of 2011 was shot multiple times as he did construction work at 2 East Shore Road, Sandys, on Friday afternoon.Detectives told a press conference today that though they do not believe Mr Ferguson was in a gang the slaying had “elements of a gang shooting”.Asked if retaliatory attacks were likely, Assistant Police Commissioner David Mirfield said it was possible but warned anyone planning to carry out such a crime they would be caught and convicted. He said gun violence was being perpetrated by a “small number of unprincipled individuals bent on violence and often this can lead to reprisals”.“Once again, I appeal personally for calm,” he added. “Let the police do their investigation.”He said the number of prosecutions and convictions in recent months for gun crime showed police were tackling the problem.“It's our job and we will continue to do that,” he said. “If people feel they need to take the law into their own hands, I will turn to the fact that we will catch and convict those in exactly the same way.”Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro said the murder scene in Mangrove Bay, Somerset, was still cordoned off and forensic officers were gathering evidence. He revealed it took officers 14 minutes to reach Mr Ferguson after several 911 calls on Friday.Asked if the response time could have been swifter due to the close proximity of a nearby police station, Mr Mirfield said: “Our police officers don't deploy from police stations. They are on patrol. I believe that 14 minutes was a reasonable time for these officers to get to the scene.”Witnesses or anyone with information about Mr Ferguson's murder should call the Serious Crime Unit on 299-8106 or the Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.
