Roban to fight Pembroke East for PLP
Former Senator Walter Roban was unveiled as the Progressive Labour Party candidate for Pembroke East yesterday as rumours swirled a November election might be in the offing.
Premier Ewart Brown has foregone the option of a summer poll but PLP insiders believe an autumn election would make sense.
One source said the Premier might want to capitalise on a bounce created by the Grand Slam in October, which could feature Tiger Woods, and a star-studded line-up at the Music Festival. A November election would coincide with the anniversary of Dr. Brown's elevation to Premier and evoke memories of the party's historic first election win in November 1998.
It would also allow the Premier to rally the party troops at the annual conference a month earlier.
However the PLP have yet to roll-out all their candidates although most are formalities with sitting MPs expected to carry on.
Yesterday Mr. Roban, 41, a trust review officer for the Bank of Bermuda, was unveiled as his party's choice for the seat currently held by retiring MP Ottiwell Simmons who took 82 percent of the votes in the 2003 election. Premier Ewart Brown said: "Walter Roban arrived at this point in his political life the old fashioned way - he earned it."
He added: "The man has a political future which is extremely bright.
"We believe the future of Bermuda essentially rests in the hands of people like Walter Roban."
Mr. Roban has been a member of the party for 20 years and helped mastermind the PLP's 1998 election victory. He told a press conference there was a need to identify more green space in the densely-populated seat and he called for a greater Police presence because of worries over drug crime. Constituents needed to play a part in letting young people know they could get ahead, said Mr. Roban.
"I started off washing pots and making ice cream and now I am here so it is possible to be what you can be in this country under the Progressive Labour Party."
Mr. Roban will face the United Bermuda Party's Sean Pitcher in an election which must be called by January 2009.
The United Bermuda Party have named all their candidates apart from their choices in Hamilton East and Devonshire West ¿ both PLP strongholds.
