Teen cleared of threatening behaviour charge

A teenager accused of arming himself with rocks and behaving in a threatening manner at a football match was cleared of all charges yesterday at Magistrates' Court.

Sanchey Grant, of North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, was the only person charged in connection with an incident on October 26 last year at Devonshire Recreation Club.

Police said at the time that the Sunday afternoon match between Wolves and Paget Lions was called off after 20 youths brandishing bladed articles approached the gates of the club in an attempt to enter the ground.

Mr. Grant, 16, was arrested the next day. He denied having an offensive weapon, behaving in a threatening manner and arming himself with rocks to cause terror to persons present.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo dismissed the latter charge after the prosecution offered no evidence yesterday. After hearing evidence on the other two charges from P.c. David Harris, Mr. Tokunbo acquitted the teen on the first two charges.

P.c. Harris was unable to confirm that Mr. Grant was one of the youths he saw involved in the incident. He told the court he saw the teenager wearing all black but Mr. Grant said he was wearing a red shirt and had several witnesses to support him.
