UBP meeting to focus on 'good governance'

The United Bermuda Party is inviting the public to a meeting tonight to hear its leaders spell out their ‘Good Governance’ plans for the Island.

Speakers at the meeting will focus on proposals including the use of referenda to decide major issues, integrity in public office legislation, freedom of information and fixed-term elections.

The party says the issues being discussed would strengthen voter ability to take part in the government process, improve government accountability as well as its transparency and responsiveness.

“We want to change the political culture of Bermuda,” said UBP leader Wayne Furbert. “We want governments to be held more accountable to the people.

“We want our representatives to be held to standards of behaviour that reflect the best of Bermuda.’’

Mr. Furbert added: “Right now we have a system that is ‘father knows best’ in style, where public will is often ignored, where political leaders talk down to people and where public concerns about questionable government are suppressed.

“Tonight the United Bermuda Party will put forward proposals to reverse the trend that has enabled governments to conduct themselves with less regard for the concerns of the people.

“Our aim is to reform democracy and ensure that power is always in the hands of the voters and that governments know it.’’

The meeting will be held at St. Andrew’s Church Hall, at 49 Church Street, Hamilton, at 7pm.
