arrived in Bermuda last night for a largely ceremonial visit.

Vice Admiral Sir Peter Abbott, NATO's Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in the Atlantic, is on the Island to decorate long-serving Royal Navy personnel and to celebrate Trafalgar Day.

Sir Peter, who served at HMS Malabar on the staff of the Senior West Indies Naval Officer between 1974 and 1976 and consequently "knows the Island well,'' will also make courtesy calls on Governor Lord Waddington, Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan, US Consul General Mr. Bob Farmer and US Naval Air Station Commander Capt. Tim Brian, Royal Navy Commander Robin Bawtree said yesterday.

Commander Bawtree said Sir Peter, who is based at the NATO headquarters of Supreme Allied Commander (Atlantic) Admiral Paul Miller, will not be entering into political discussions while in Bermuda and is here largely to perform ceremonial duties.

Among the duties the 52-year-old Vice Admiral will undertake today are the 1.30 p.m. presentation of Long Service and Good Conduct medals to Leading Steward Mr. Duncan Henderson and Leading Marine Engineering Mechanic Mr. Nigel Barnicle at Malabar and the appearance as guest of honour at the Royal Naval Officers Association's annual Trafalgar Day dinner.

The dinner, which is to be held at The Cottage on Ireland Island at 7.30 p.m., will commemorate the 189th anniversary of the Battle Of Trafalgar, in which the British navy under Admiral Horatio Nelson routed the sea forces of Napoleon. Sir Peter will propose a toast to Lord Nelson's "immortal memory.'' The Vice Admiral leaves the Island tomorrow.
