Large projects include $1.475 million for the upgrading of the runway and the initiation of an improvement scheme for the fire safety division. In the first of four years, $1 million is earmarked.

Transport Minister Dr. Ewart Brown said many of the Airport projects were already underway.

But he said some plans had been brought forward and others such as entertainment and greeting at Kindley Field could be started without major schedule changes.

Cruise ships will enjoy better access to St. George's with the completion of work to the Town Cut Channel.

The $880,000 project was to have been finished last year but had to be postponed whilst urgent repairs were made to docking facilities.

Also at the Airport, $533,000 is to be spent on the growing Registry of Aircraft.

The money will go toward training existing staff in the areas of flight operations and airworthiness. In addition, new skilled workers will be taken on.

A total spending of $44.6 million in Transport sees an increase of just over $3 million on the previous year.

Most of the extra cash is at the Airport, but there are also increases in funding for the Transport Control Department and Public Transportation Department -- which includes $1.35 million on replacement buses.
