Aubrey Garfield Harris, 35, of Middle Road, Southampton, pleaded not guilty to four offences stemming from Tuesday's attack, including charges of unlawful wounding, assaulting a Police officer, possession of an offensive weapon and resisting arrest.
The Policeman was treated in King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after he was assaulted with an iron bar during a disturbance at Middle Road, close to the Port Royal Fire Station. The officer was later released.
Senior Magistrate Will Francis agreed with lawyer Victoria Pearman that a psychiatric report should be prepared on Harris under the Mental Health Act.
Harris was remanded in custody until a further court appearance on November 19.
