Bike riders back on track

And win or lose, Howard Paynter and Aaron Cannonier have already beaten the odds. Their stolen cycles were recovered and returned to them this week.

Howard, 13, learned on Wednesday night that his $5,000 1995 Yamaha 80 motocross cycle had been found by children, hidden in bushes near PHC Stadium in Warwick. The decals were missing, but the bike was otherwise in good shape.

The off-road cycle, which is only a few months old, was not insured because of the nature of motocross racing.

It had been stolen from a garage in Smith's late in January, along with seven-year-old Aaron Cannonier's Yamaha Peewee motocross bike. Aaron's bike, also in good shape, was discovered by Police on Wednesday among a cache of stolen cycles in Warwick.

Howard, who is battling for second place in the Bermuda Auto-Cycle Union's Pepsi National Championship motocross series, is "really excited,'' said his mother, Mrs. Terry Furbert.

"We are quite happy to have the bikes back,'' said his father, Mr. Howard Paynter, Sr.

Mrs. Furbert wanted to thank Bermuda Police, Works & Engineering officials who helped look for the bikes, the news media, and the general public.
