BIU race starts
Mr. Ottiwell Simmons has begun, albeit quietly as the three likely front runners for the position are keeping a low profile.
Mr. Chris Furbert, Mr. Derrick Burgess and Mr. George Scott had little to say yesterday.
"The people will nominate who they think can best serve them over the next two years,'' Mr. Furbert said. "Other than that there is not a whole lot that can be said. I will try to attend the meetings and explain why I think I am a good candidate for the job.'' Mr. Furbert is the union's chief negotiator and second vice president.
His challengers are expected to be first vice president Mr. Burgess, who heads the hotel division and Mr. George Scott, a former assistant General Secretary at the BIU.
Mr. Scott said it was inappropriate for him to comment at this early stage although he said that "the politicking has already started''.
Mr. Burgess issued a curt "no comment'' when asked about his plans.
Mr. Simmons' successor will be chosen at the BIU's biennial conference next March.
