Cabinet to look at the future of US Naval Base
future of the US Naval Air Station.
It will plan for Bermuda eventually taking responsibility for fire and rescue services and air traffic control.
These are currently carried out at Bermuda's airport by US navy personnel.
Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan said the committee would examine what the new duties would mean for Bermuda.
It would, for instance, consider costs and staffing, he added.
The committee is chaired by Minister of Delegated and Legislative Affairs the Hon. Sir John Sharpe.
Members include Works & Engineering Minister the Hon. Ann Cartwright DeCouto, Transport Minister the Hon. Ralph Marshall, and Labour Minister the Hon.
Irving Pearman.
The Premier said the committee would start work immediately and send a report to Government after some initial research.
He added "high levels of cooperation'' given by US officials here and in Washington would help the committee.
Sir John Sharpe stressed Government wanted the Base to stay and continue providing services at the Civil Air Terminal.
"These include air traffic control, weather and crash and fire services,'' he said.
"But because the Civil Air Terminal is the vital lifeline for locals and residents and tourism and international companies we need to ensure that there is no interruption or diminution of the first class services Bermuda presently enjoys.
"Hence we have to look at the implications down the road and be prepared in case our worst fears are realised and these services are eventually withdrawn.''
