House of Assembly today is passed.

Transport Minister the Hon. Maxwell Burgess is set to introduce The Motor Car Amendment (No.3) Bill 1994 which will ease restrictions on what cars can be used on Bermuda's roads.

The bill would reduce the ratio of the weight of a private car to the maximum engine power output to 10.5 kilograms per kilowatt from 12.5 kilograms per killowatt.

"We're responding to technology which is using different lighter metals and different lighter plastics'' in automobile production, Mr. Burgess told The Royal Gazette . "Cars are just as strong today, but they are being produced a lot lighter.'' Mr. Burgess said he heard representations recently from a man who went overseas to purchase a small Honda which he was unable to use on Bermuda roads because of its weight to power ratio. That car would be among several affected by the change, he said.

The Civil Airports (Pay and Display Parking) Amendment Regulations 1994 is also up for debate today.

Long-term parking is free at the Airport, and the bill would allow for charges as "an income opportunity'', Mr. Burgess said.

"I can't imagine an international airport in the world where you can go and not have to pay for long-term parking,'' he said. As Bermuda takes over responsibilities and costs at the Airport, "we must look at every revenue opportunity within reason''.

Charges of $3 per day, $15 per week, and $35 per month for long-term parking are proposed.
