in Magistrates' Court to two counts of cheque forgery.

Carl Eugene McNair, 32, admitted stealing two cheques from Cynthia Swan, forging them and obtaining $400 from the Bank of N.T. Butterfield on May 22 and June 11.

Insp. Peter Duffy, prosecuting, said McNair was a guest at Swan's Spice Hill, Warwick residence when the incidents occurred.

McNair intercepted the cheques which were mailed to Swan and stole them, Insp.

Duffy said.

McNair's last similar offence was April 29, 1988 when he was sentenced to six months of community service for stealing two gold rings and a chain.

McNair told the Wor. John Judge that three days after his arrest Swan took him to Hamilton Police Station and offered to drop the charges.

But Mr. Judge said: "These offences are very serious. I would like that point further investigated because it will certainly have an effect on sentencing''.

He adjourned the matter until September 10 when the social inquiry report is due.

McNair was released on $500 bail.
