Chief Justice welcomes new lawyer

In the Supreme Court, surrounded by several friends and relatives, Ms Stanton was welcomed by Chief Justice the Hon. Mr. Justice Ward.

Ms Stanton, the daughter of the late Mr. Keith Stanton and Mrs. Marjorie Stanton, completed her law degree at the University of Durham in Durham, England and then attended The College of Law, Lancaster Gate in London.

She then went on to complete her articles at the Stephenson Harwood law firm in London and was later admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of England and Wales.

Ms Stanton returned to Bermuda and began working at AS and K and will now specialise in mutual funds and securities at the firm.

ELDERLY WOMAN HURT IN ROAD ACCIDENT AC Elderly woman hurt in road accident A 63-year-old woman suffered abrasions and bruising to her arms and legs when her cycle went over an embankment in Southampton.

The woman lost control of the livery cycle while she was attempting to make a U-turn on South Road, near the Sonesta Beach Hotel on Wednesday morning.

Police said the cycle went over a steep embankment.

POLICE INVESTIGATING THREE BREAK-INS CRM Police investigating three break-ins Police are investigating three break-ins at houses in Pembroke, Devonshire, and Paget during the daylight hours.

Thieves hit the residences while they were unoccupied yesterday.

Jewellery and an undisclosed amount of cash were stolen.

NUMBER OF AIR VISITORS ARE DOWN TOU Number of air visitors are down Two hundred and ten fewer visitors arrived in Bermuda by air between May 1-7, 1995 compared to the same period last year, recently released figures show.

This represents a decline of 2.2 per cent, although cruise ship passengers increased by 14.4 per cent.

In 1995 between May 1-7 there were 6,632 visitors compared to the same week in 1994 where only 5,799 tourists arrived.

Overall, air arrivals from January 1, 1995 to May 7, 1995 are down some 4.8 percent.

MALE ACQUAINTANCES ASSAULT WOMEN CRM Male acquaintances assault women Police responded to six reports of assault yesterday, including three in which women were attacked by male acquaintances.

In one of the incidents, 24-year-old Southampton man struck a 19-year-old Devonshire woman on her head with a crash helmet following an argument at the woman's residence.

Police said the woman ran out of the house when he threatened her with a knife.

The man eventually drove away on the woman's motor cycle, but was arrested when he returned to her house later in the evening.

SOCCER PLAYER DENIES IMPORTING DRUGS CTS Soccer player denies importing drugs Boulevard Blazers' right back Dean Donovan Boyles, 32, appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday and denied importing cannabis on January 3, 1995.

He will appear in court again on July 14 for trial.

Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp released Boyles on $1,000 bail and a like surety.

TEEN GETS VIOLENT WITH POLICE OFFICERS CTS Teen gets violent with Police officers A 17-year-old from St. George's is expected to appear in Magistrates' Court for obstructing Police officers.

Police yesterday said the male youth was engaged in an apparent drug transaction at York Street on Tuesday evening.

When narcotics officers attempted to search him under the Misuse of Drugs Act he became violent and attacked the officers, striking one of them before he was subdued.

An 18-year-old Pembroke man is also expected to appear in court tomorrow for shoplifting from a store on Queen Street in Hamilton.

A sales attendant at the store caught the youth and stopped him outside of the store.

A Police officer on patrol in the area was alerted and went to the aid of the shopkeeper. The youth was subsequently arrested.

MAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL OFFENCES CTS Man charged with sexual offences A 33-year-old man denied sexual offences against two girls who were both under the age of ten.

The incident which is alleged to have occurred on May 2, involved the man touching his body in a sexual manner and then touching the two girls who were in his presence.

Crown counsel Ms Charlene Scott successfully opposed bail for the accused who will next come before the courts on June 1 for trial.

He is represented by lawyer Mr. Peter Farge.

SECURE YOUR CHEQUES, PUBLIC WARNED CRM Secure your cheques, public warned Police yesterday warned people to secure their cheques after several cheques were stolen from an unattended van in Smith's Parish, forged and passed at various locations.

Thieves also removed the wheels of an unattended motor cycle in Hamilton Parish yesterday.
