Church addition rejected

West Pembroke Pentecostal Assembly, at Princess Estate Road, Pembroke, applied to the DAB to extend its building's southern wall by 20 feet.

Pastor of the church the Rev. Harlyn Purdy said this was to give the church more office space and the ability to accommodate those at its Sunday School more comfortably.

The plans would have also given the church a nursery on the upper level of the building, a washroom to accommodate its elderly members, and a larger kitchen area.

But the DAB, in its meeting on August 19, refused the in principle application on the following grounds: The height and extent of retaining walls necessary to achieve development and the topography of the site was not suited to the development form proposed in the Bermuda Development Plan 1983 Planning Statement; The scale and intensity of the proposal due to the traffic it would generate would have a "detrimental'' impact on the area; and The site is not served directly by a public road, therefore going against provisions in the 1983 Plan.

Rev. Purdy, who had not yet been informed by the DAB about the refusal, said he could not say what the church's next move would be until the decision was discussed with the architects and the church board.

The DAB also deferred VSB owner Mr. Kenny DeFontes' application for additional transmitting facilities and three new satellite dishes at Barkers Hill, Devonshire, pending a site visit.
