Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Roger Evans, of Lighthouse Road, pleaded guilty to attempting to break into Hand Arnold Ltd.'s warehouse on February 18 with intent to steal.

The court heard that Evans was celebrating with two other men outside the warehouse on Front Street.

Around 7.40 p.m., prosecuting Insp. Peter Duffy said, Evans put a step ladder next to the building and climbed it.

Evans was "very drunk and unsteady'', Insp. Duffy said.

When he reached the top of the ladder, he punched the glass window of the warehouse to gain entry for more liquor.

Insp. Duffy said Evans came down after he realised his knuckles were bleeding.

A witness contacted Police who arrested Evans at the junction of King and Front streets.

At the Police station, Evans admitted that he attempted to break into the warehouse to satisfy his craving for alcohol, Insp. Duffy said.

But yesterday Evans insisted that he was not trying to steal from the warehouse.

"I broke the window and came down,'' he said, adding that he was willing to pay for the damage to the window which was estimated to be $400.

Acting Senior Magistrate the Wor. John Judge ordered Evans to pay a fine of $250 or spend 25 days in prison.

"If Hand Arnold want to sue you, it's up to them,'' Mr. Judge added.
