acted to prevent a Police officer from placing handcuffs on both his wrists during an arrest.

And the court heard that he was eventually subdued when back up officers arrived, placed two sets of handcuffs around his wrists and dragged him across the parking lot.

It is alleged that Perinchief and Karen Thomas his girlfriend at the time, swore at and assaulted a Police officer in the course of his duties.

The allegations stem from an incident at the Elbow Beach Hotel car park on November 19, last year. Perinchief is charged with swearing at and assaulting a constable who was trying to arrest him. And Thomas is alleged to have joined the melee.

Perinchief, 24, of Zuill's Park Road, Smith's Parish, is the son of former Assistant Police Commissioner Wayne Perinchief.

He has denied two charges of assaulting a Police officer and one charge of using offensive words in a public place.

Thomas, 38, of Railway Trail, Southampton, also pleaded not guilty to the same charges.

Perinchief who took the stand in his own defence, said he reacted only after Det. Con. Mark Clarke attempted to arrest him for something he had not done.

Initially that night he said he was speaking to Thomas and expressed his wish to leave the club premises.

He admitted that he did use foul language during his conversation with his girlfriend but these comments were aimed at her and no one else.

At the time Perinchief said the Police officers were some distance away and Det. Con. Clarke became annoyed after he (Perinchief) refused to return his greeting.

From that moment on Perinchief said it seemed as though Det. Con. Clarke was intent on arresting him.

Perinchief said a scuffle broke out although no punches were thrown as Det.

Con. Clarke succeeded in placing one handcuff on his right arm.

Thomas meanwhile told the court that she became involved only after Perinchief and Det. Con. Clarke fell to the ground.

She said she knelt beside Perinchief and told him to cool down because the entire situation became more serious than was necessary.

Thomas said it was only after Sgt. Dennis Gordon pulled her hair that she let a scream out and soon afterward she was placed under arrest and did not resist.

Magistrate Cheryl-Ann Mapp will deliver a judgment in the case on October 24.

Thomas and Perinchief are being represented by lawyer Philip Perinchief while Inspector Kenrick James appeared for the prosecution.
