Cruise visitor fined $2,300 for possession
$2,300 in fines after pleading guilty in Magistrates' Court to possession of 10.3 grams of cannabis, some cocaine, and rolling papers.
Acting Senior Magistrate Cheryl Ann Mapp was told Annette Binetti, a Connecticut-based accountant and a passenger on the Dreamward , was arrested on May 27 after Customs officers at Pier 6, conducting random searches of passengers, discovered 0.15 grams of cocaine in her handbag.
A subsequent search of her cabin turned up 10.3 grams of cannabis as well as a package of cigarette rolling papers, said Police Prosecutor Sergeant Anthony Mouchette.
Defence Counsel Archie Warner appealed for leniant sentence, arguing Ms Binetti considered herself a "recreational drug user'' who made no attempt to bring the drugs onto Bermuda soil. He also told the Court Ms Binetti was unaware she was carrying the "very small quantity'' of cocaine in her bag.
Regardless of the intent replied Mapp, "We don't need you to be high in our country.'' She fined Ms Binetti $2,000 for possession of the cannabis, $150 for possession of the cocaine, and $150 for possession of the rolling papers.
