Disqualified driver faces prison term after 15th offence
A 27-year-old Pembroke man who was caught for the 15th time driving while disqualified was yesterday given one month to provide the court with reasons why he should not be sent to prison.
Percy Smith of Glebe Road, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to the latest offence on December 8.
Sgt. Rex Osborne, prosecuting, told the court that Smith had a lengthy record for traffic offences. "This is his 15th conviction for disqualified driving in 10 years.'' Magistrate the Wor. Cheryl Ann Mapp, noting that Smith had already served time in prison for disqualified driving, said: "You seem like a person who has no regard for the orders of this court.'' Smith explained he was on his way to purchase insulin for his grandmother who was sick.
He said that his uncle, who lived with his grandmother, was not giving her the proper care and that he was the only person she could depend on.
But Mrs. Mapp replied: "You are well aware of the fact that you are unable to assist anyone if it requires you to be in charge of a motor vehicle. You are not acting in the best interests of your family when you act in this way.'' Mrs. Mapp adjourned the matter until January 13 at which time Smith will be required to provide proof of his grandmother's illness, before a sentence is imposed.
