Dolphin Quest celebrates second birth: Mother and calf both said to be doing
For the second time in a week Dolphin Quest veterinarians and marine biologists are monitoring the development of a new addition.
First it was Bailey, who gave birth on Tuesday in The Keep at the Maritime Museum in Dockyard and yesterday her stable mate Caliban had a calf after nearly an hour of labour.
Dolphin Quest's practice is to monitor newborns in a 24-hour watch for the first two weeks of life and at 3.50 a.m. the crew watching Bailey's calf noted the appearance of the tiny tail fins protruding from Caliban's birth canal.
By 4.05 a.m. it was all over. Spokesman for Dolphin Quest, Chris Heslop said: "Mom and baby are doing well.
"The 24-hour watch is to make sure the calf is nursing and breathing properly,'' he added. "For both of them the next two weeks are critical.'' The dolphins are being kept at The Keep while the Dolphin Quest facility at the Fairmont Southampton Princess is refurbished following damage caused by Hurricane Gert.
In related news, Dolphin Quest intends to submit plans to the Development Applications Board for a redesigned aquarium soon.
