Dr. Idwal Wyn (Walwyn) Hughes was appointed yesterday to be one of three independent Senators.

"I am obviously very pleased and proud and I hope to be able to listen and learn for a little while,'' he said.

"This is something quite different for me after long years in public service.

It is a different role and I expect to listen and learn to start with.'' Dr. Hughes' career in public service spans 40 years. His posts included Permanent Secretary of Finance, Director of the Bermuda Monetary Authority and Director of Agriculture and Fisheries.

He is also President of the Warwick Academy Board of Governors.
