Drug pair given jail term
possessing almost $140,000 worth of heroin with intent to supply and obstructing Police officers.
Damon Kujal Simons, 23, of First Avenue, and Jamel Tito Smith, 22, of West Park Lane, were found guilty of those charges and possessing drug equipment on August 4. Simons was found guilty that day of a separate charge of cocaine possession which stemmed from the same incident.
The men received eight-year sentences for possessing heroine and concurrent sentences of three years for the drug equipment possession and obstruction charges. Simons received a four-year sentence for the cocaine possession.
Supreme Court heard during the trial that Police raided an apartment on King's Gate Lane in Pembroke on February 12 of last year and found packets of heroin in a recently flushed toilet and a table covered in clear plastic twists full of white powder.
Smith was sitting next to the table and witnesses said they saw Simons escape through a window and flee -- dropping the cocaine along the way. He was nabbed less than four hours later.
The amounts of heroin and cocaine recovered totalled 19.98 and 21.1 grammes respectively. Smith and Simons maintained their innocence throughout the trial.
