East End Primary to focus on `outstanding' people
"successful and outstanding'' people at month's end.
Since the beginning of this month the school has invited Bermudians from various sectors of the community to share their success stories with students in morning and afternoon assemblies.
Those who have visited so far include Shadow Environment Minister Jimmy Williams, St. George's mayor Henry Hayward, former head librarian Cyril Packwood, Visitor Industry Partnership chairman E. Michael Jones, Bermudian Heritage Association chairman Ross Smith, musician Ghandi Burgess, artist Otto Trott, and freelance photographers Scott Stallard and Lawrence Trott.
And East End deputy principal Wendell Smith told The Royal Gazette the experience has been enjoyed by participants and the students.
"It's like a trip down memory lane,'' he said. "Both the honourees and the children are enjoying it.'' Today, Opposition Leader Jennifer Smith, St. George's deputy mayor Lois Perinchief, and assistant director of Parks Candy Lee Foggo will speak at the school.
While a majority of the honourees attended the school as youngsters, Mr. Smith said it was not planned that way.
"Because tourism was the theme of Education Month this year and St. George's in itself is a tourism attraction, we wanted to recognise some outstanding people with ties in the East End community,'' he explained. "We had teachers, principals and parents choose the honourees.'' By inviting such people, Mr. Smith added, the school aimed to expose the students to local role models, educate them about tourism, and allow them to hear different views on "keys to personal success''.
The school will culminate the month with a Celebrated Citizens Award Dinner at Marriott Castle Harbour Hotel on February 28, beginning at 7.30 p.m.
At the dinner, under the patronage of Shell Group of Companies (Bermuda) chief executive Robert Stewart and his wife, East End students will read the honourees' biographies and make formal presentations to them.
Local Jazz musician Shine Hayward will also perform at the event.
Tickets at $45 per person can be purchased at The East End Florist, Music Chamber, 27th Century Boutique, True Reflections, or at the school. There will also be a door prize of a $500 travel voucher from Meyers.
