East End PTA ends protest

Department of Education.

Although some parents are still unhappy with Government's proposed settlement, The Royal Gazette understands they have decided not to mount any more opposition.

At the heart of the dispute, which had been brewing for several months, is the alleged mistreatment of two veteran teachers by principal Mrs. Cathy Bassett who has been at the helm only six months.

One of the teachers, who was responsible for primary six and has taught at the school for 14 years, was the former mathematics coordinator.

She was initially without a job because she had decided not to renew her contract as mathematics coordinator so she could devote her energy to fill a vacancy teaching primary seven students.

Later she declined the primary seven position because it would be phased out after the 1995/96 school year.

By then, a new teacher had been hired to teach her primary six class and the primary seven class she declined.

Since she had already made it clear that she was no longer interested in the mathematics coordinator position, it too was filled, leaving her without a job so her only choice was to transfer or be transferred.

Similarly, the deputy principal who would have been at the school for 21 years in June has decided to transfer at the end of the school year.

She was recently demoted to teacher even though she reapplied for the position as the incumbent in February.

The committee allege that although she sent in her resume she was rejected for the deputy principal position without even an interview with the principal as civil service policy requires.

And they claimed the Department of Education was at fault because it allowed this alleged infraction to occur.

Since the demoted deputy principal has decided to transfer from East End Primary at the end of this school year, a space has been created in the teaching roster that would allow the former primary six teacher to have her old job back.

And it is this part of the resolution that has worried some parents because they say it does not address the Department's role in supervising the decisions the principal made.

Nonetheless, Parent Teachers Association president Mr. Vaughn Trott, who is also a member of the concerned parents group that met with the Department last week, said the parents decided at Wednesday night's meeting to leave the issue as it stands.

"Some parents were disappointed that some form of apology was not forthcoming from the Department,'' he explained. "We respect the teachers decision and we have decided that we want to move on to the best of our ability.

"But we will be holding the Department accountable from here on in. We will keep a close eye on things and take it day by day.'' The East End PTA is hosting a fair at the school on June 10 between 11 a.m.

until 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome.
