Police and fire crews found the blaze in the centre of the hut when they arrived at 6.20 p.m. last Wednesday. Substantial damage was caused to the roof.

A source said up to $30,000 of damage may have been caused to the hut and equipment.

The club's administrative assistant, Mike Pitt, said: "We have not finalised the investigation yet so it is too early to comment.'' Police and the Fire Service are carrying out an investigation.

The pair were reported to Police after allegedly being seen acting suspiciously at about 8.30 p.m. and were taken to Hamilton Police Station.

A duffel bag containing clothing and other personal items was recovered at the scene. Inquiries are continuing.
