Firefighters tame major blazes
fires and a host of minor incidents.
At 6.55 a.m. on Sunday, five vehicles and 15 personnel raced to the Captain's Lounge on Reid Street where a fire was blazing.
The flames were extinguished, but not before they caused some $5,000 worth of damage which involved a desk and an air conditioner.
A station spokesman was unable to reveal the cause of the fire as it was still under investigation yesterday afternoon.
On Saturday evening, about $7,500 worth of damage was caused by a fire on board a 35-foot-beige cabin cruiser.
Police arrived at Rego's Port in Mills Creek, where the boat was moored, to find people trying to douse the flames with water.
The fire spokesman said four vehicles and 11 firefighters responded to the call at 6.57 p.m.
Considerable damage was caused to the fibreglass transom and gunwale and to the trim tab unit and wiring.
The cause of the blaze is believed to have been electrical in nature and may have involved a pump's wiring.
Police also attended a fire at Rockford Cycle Livery on Glebe Road in Pembroke that night.
They arrived just before 8 p.m. to find that a small controlled brush fire had gotten out of hand after being left unattended.
About 50 cycles and three cars that were nearby also caught fire causing the alarm to be raised.
The Fire Service spokesman said the station received a call about the fire at 7.44 p.m. and sent three vehicles and nine personnel to the scene and the blaze was extinguished.
A figure for the amount of damage caused was not available last night.
