The vehicle, with its emergency equipment activated, was travelling along the same Smith's Parish road where a young man was involved in a fatal bike accident one week ago today.

The Bermuda Fire Service's Lt. Jon Thompson said the accident took place around 11.20 a.m., on Harrington Sound Road, as the engine responded to an automatic fire alarm at an East End hotel.

"A fire appliance from the Clearwater station was responding to an automatic fire alarm at the Marriott Castle Harbour Hotel,'' he explained. "They had just finished a call at the Clay House Inn in Devonshire and were travelling around Harrington Sound Road. They had just passed Devil's Hole Hill when the driver lost control.'' Lt. Thompson said the truck crossed over the lane and the back of the vehicle struck the off-side wall.

The vehicle returned to the eastbound lane and remounted the sidewalk before it came to a stop.

Two firemen riding on the back step on the truck were injured.

Lt. Thompson said one of the firefighters suffered a fractured leg while the other sustained what was believed to be a dislocated shoulder.

Police said the vehicle sustained damage to its offside.

One week ago today, less than one kilometre away from where the fire truck lost control, an accident claimed the life of 25-year-old Yusef Hewey of Devonshire.

Mr. Hewey was riding along Harrington Sound Road, near `Lion's Rock' corner when he lost control of his cycle and struck a wall.

According to area residents, the stretch of road between Harrington Sound School and Devil's Hole Hill, is a common accident spot since motorists tended to speed despite the many bends.

Police and fire officials are continuing their investigation into yesterday's collision.
