Gordon set to reshuffle Cabinet this week

A major Cabinet reshuffle is set to be announced in the next two days, The Royal Gazette can reveal.

For Premier Pamela Gordon is understood to have made her mind up on the Government team she will take into the General Election.

The changes are likely to be announced on Wednesday -- allowing her time to introduce her new team to the United Bermuda Party caucus on Thursday morning and have them sworn by Governor Thorold Masefield that afternoon.

Ms Gordon, however, may still choose to announce the changes tomorrow, immediately after Cabinet holds its regular weekly meeting.

But she is understood to be definitely planning to take her hand-picked squad of Ministers into the new session of the House of Assembly on Friday.

The Premier -- just back from an insurance conference and a meeting of women world leaders at Boston's Harvard University -- is aiming to stamp her personality on a Cabinet largely inherited from her predecessor David Saul.

Party insiders believe only two Ministries are absolutely certain to remain in the same hands.

Finance Minister Grant Gibbons and David Dodwell at the Tourism Ministry -- both of whom are reckoned to be well on top of their responsibilities -- will stay where they are.

It is believed Ms Gordon wants to recruit younger, fresher faces for Cabinet -- and she may chop and change Ministerial responsibilities as well.

And Deputy Premier and Education Minister Jerome Dill could be learning the ropes in a new role by the end of the week. Regarded as one of the sharpest brains in the United Bermuda Party team, he is widely seen as having broken the back of problems associated with the massive restructuring of the schools system.

Mr. Dill -- who suffered a stroke recently -- could be moved to another Ministry which would allow him to devote more time to his Deputy Premier's role -- and take the pressure off a little in the run-up to the General Election, likely to be held in October.

And Transport Minister Wayne Furbert is tipped to be on the move to a new Ministry.

Mr. Furbert is understood to have impressed the Premier with his work in the modernisation of the Airport and the setting up of a new, integrated Transport Authority.

And Labour and Home Affairs Minister Quinton Edness is likely to find himself a new role, possibly in Health and Social Services -- with Mr. Furbert a contender for Mr. Edness' current job.

Tim Smith -- another younger face -- could be due a move from his Youth and Sport portfolio to a more senior Ministry.

One-time Management and Technology Minister John Barritt might be in line for a Cabinet recall.

And there may be Cabinet seats for ex-Government Senate leader Gary Pitman, recently elected an MP for Pembroke West, and Kim Young, who won in Paget East around a year ago.

Ms Young, an ex-nurse with a background in health and social issues, could also be a contender for the Health and Social Services seat in Cabinet.
