Government house opens its gate to Bermuda's youngsters

ERROR RG P4 20.4.1993 A story in yesterday's newspaper incorrectly identified the Progressive Labour Party's Shadow Minister for Youth. The shadow minister is Mr. Dennis Lister.

Governor Lord Waddington opened up Government House to Bermuda's teenagers for the first time on Saturday.

It gave the youngsters an opportunity to meet Lord Waddington in less than formal circumstances.

And it could lead to an annual celebration of the good works of young people in the community.

The Governor was delighted with the way the day went. A relaxed Lord Waddington said: "I decided that we should invite teenagers along to Government House.

"This is their heritage and they should be allowed to see what goes on here.

But we thought we should provide entertainment so they should enjoy their time here.'' Teenagers were invited by some of the Island's major youth organisations to take part in the events in the grounds of the Governor's home.

Aide de Camp Mr. Eddie Lamb, with the assistance of the Bermuda Regiment, organised a rotation of events including soccer, volleyball and dunking people in water.

There were also numerous stalls from youth organisations involved in the day, including the Police cadets, the scouts and the guides.

Later on in the evening a barbecue was held and a concert, featuring local bands, delighted the young people present.

Lord Waddington added: "Young people are not involved in Government and I believe that they should become more involved.

"Apart from the events outside, we are inviting the young people inside Government House. Many are in here for the first time.

"A lot of work went into this event and I have met a lot of young people. It is a success and we will be looking to repeat it in future years.'' Youth Minister Sen. Pamela Gordon visited the event and met many of the young people.

Also at the event was Shadow Youth Minister Mr. Terry Lister who said: "Many young people do not realise the importance of politics in their lives.

This is a fun day but the young people here will begin to understand how Government House and the Governor are part of Bermudian life.''
